Winter 2009 Fishing Report

July 09 Winter fishing report from Fishfinder Charters

With ever changing weather patterns and fishing conditions and currents its little wonder things seem gloomy during this time of year.
Winter actually can be some of the most productive quality fishing all year. Yellowfin and Bluefin Tuna on the shelf, Blue Eye Cod, Hapuka and Gemfish out wide in the deep and Snapper, Perch, Morwong, Flatties and good Kings on the reefs out wide etc.
We found that when we could get out safely we’ve generally done well for whatever
Targeting. This year the currents have been unusually warm for longer than usual and thus producing more windy days than normal though the fishing on the other hand has been pretty good.
Weve caught nice Yellowfin Tuna and Mako Sharks while cubing on the shelf. Most of our tuna charters are conducted using the cubing technique rather than trolling for hours as we find that we catch more and better quality fish adopting this drift and berley style approach. Why drive around all day when if possible bring the fish to us.
In abit closer the reef fishing has been great in fact, Ive found that the overall quality of the fish have been better in size and numbers. The persistant warm currents have been responsible for this I think and that’s great!

Good Kings at the Twelve Mile and Peak on jigs and live baits, Nice Snapper on the in close reefs and good catches of Eastern Blue Spot Flathead on the gravel drifting.
Hopefully the great Autumn to now run lasts, you better get cracking
and give us a call or youll be sure to miss out on an opportunity to share in the bounty!
