Hi all, its spring again and the short winter days are gone for now.
The weather patterns have been strange this year with hot and cold spells, long periods of current and heaps of rain making life a bit trying when it comes too getting out for a fish.
October through to December can be very tough as its migration and season changing time but with persistence and some thought your catches can be impressive.
October is generally Snapper time as these royal fish move in to the inshore reefs off Sydney around 20 – 35 fathoms (double for meters). Soft plastics and baits will work and its up to you which you choose, we find soft plastics more challenging though a lot of fun to use and they fish a greater range through the depth column than baits alone due to their vivid action and slow sink time. Even using plastics on paternoster rigs work really well for Snapper in particular new Squidgey Wrigglers 140mm these are smashing for this method.
During the Snapper migration these fish will often graze on the gravel patches before residing on the reefs and whilst you are chasing a feed of Flathead you’ll end up catching Snapper, how goods That!
Flathead are also tops this time of year and they like the Snapper, love soft plastics.
So you get the best of both worlds in one outing.
On the surface, Whales are on their way back to the cooler South and huge schools of Salmon, Bonito and Striped Tuna race around under the newly arrived Mutton Birds or Shearwaters. Trolling small feather jigs or casting metals and flies will all do the trick which ever you decide. These fish are heaps of fun and provide great sport on light tackle.
Kings are beginning to arrive in close and squid or Slugo baits are the go.
A good overhead or heavy spin outfit is the go for these powerful fish or you’ll struggle to stay hooked and land one.
The recent over plagued Leather Jackets haven’t been too bad this spring in close
And that’s a plus for us so far as saving some of our rigs and tackle.
Out wider, well that’s different you had better take some wire rigs with you as the Jackets out there are everywhere!
