Oct 5 2009

Gregg and Hong booked for last Mon holiday weekend, We were lucky to even get out as the weekend looked like a complete wash out with 25kt southerlies and rain. Luckily, we got break and on Monday things calmed down so we set out. Conditions had settled although it was still abit swelly but fishable. the surface temp read 18.6C and the current was very slight at .2 of a knot but the bottom temp was freeeeezing the snapper leads were like ice! NOT GOOD I thought to myself this was gonna be a tough day indeed.

Whales were cruising by and tonnes of Salmon were schooling in close to Nth Head and Bluefish pnt... Striped Tuna wizzing about under hundreds of migrating Mutton Birds it was certainly lively on the surface but the reefs were quieter than normal.

Flatties were the go, Out came the squidgies and rigs and we began... some beauties caught amongst lots of little stuff but the plastics and blue tail prawns prevailed. Some nice Bonito on the troll for bonuses on the way home.

Nice bunch of fellas....

11/10/09

Sunday morning, the weather finally broke again! my god it seems like winter will never end! Anyway, Stuart and his crew from the Clarendon hotel fishing club boarded the Fishfinder at Balmain wharf at 6am after a quick saftey talk and intros we set off.

Flathead were the target for the day, we started at a ground off Macquarie light of south head afew fish landed but all in all abit quiet for my liking so we headed to another old mark further to the nth off north head. The water was green although full of glowing crystalites a good sign. Wind was 5-10kts and the current was running south on the bottom and slow on the surface... All good! so where are the fish? strange, I would have sworne they would have to be in close? any way we moved.

It started out very slow but I was convinced that it was the right decision and we continued too work the grounds. Flathead and good ones came on board slow between fish but worth the wait. I broke out the Squidgies to some of the fellas on our "custom rigs" THEN.... Snapper and another  and then.. multipul hook ups! mate it was insane upto 9 fish at a time all on at once! These guys were in heaven and we were too! 70 meters of water on the gravel and there they were (the snapper) mudding and we hit em.. a truely special day catching fish in numbers that we only dream about mate thats awsome! The Squidgey Wrigglers have proven themselves a winner again with "S Facter" of coarse! heres some shots....

24/10/09

Saturday morning its a BEAUTY no wind to worry about and the Carosel Hotel lads are waiting eagerly at the wharf, couldnt be better! we arrive at Bluefish wide 69mtr mark, sea temp:18.9C, light S/E breeze current running STH on the bottom and variable on top. The first drop produces a couple of nice flatties and not much else so we make a slight adjustment to the drift which did the trick the Flathead come in thick and fast with the odd Mowie thrown in. Funny thing though no Snapper! I think as the moon moves into new moon mode this week the reddies begin to back off and rest on the harder reefs and the flatties become more active. everyone had Wrigglers on the bottom hooks and they earnt their reputation today.

"well done lads"! a good catch of nice eating fish just the same. Thanks Trevor!

25/10/09

Brian and Max from SSAFA thought it might be a good day for a bit of "stress relief" and joined by Graham, Phil and lads "banana boys" from Coogee Randwick off we went to see if we could find some reddies today. As the barometer fell and conditions were similar to the day before with exception breeze E/NE 2-5kts we set off to fish Dee Why wide. Guess what! more Flathead the first falling to Maxies hands 61cm a cracker. Then more came in one after the other on plastics, bluetail prawns and pillies. Brian and I were teased by tiny reddies on minnows and flick baits but no good! The others fishing light 8oz leads were out doing us this round. Good Pig fish, Cracker Morwong and Flathead were the species of the morning with one Morwong measuring 52cm! well done lads!

Sorry Brian I'll make it up too you mate those sneaky Reddies cant hide for ever!

6/11/09

Its Friday, Adam and lads are sick of work, so fishin it is! the weather gave us a window to get out there in amongst em. A very sloppy Easterly sea, the current running down from the Nth at about 1kt, depth between 45-62mtr and the temp 20.9C. The fishing was harder than expected but we found a feed never the less. Flathead, Trevally, Morwong and piggies were on the menu today. We fished up Nth as the current and E-NE breeze gave us no option. Not the best fishing for the season but with some nice quality fish hitting the deck, who's complaining!   good work lads!

8/11/09

Sunday showed abit more improvment with conditions a little better although still not great. We chose to fish off NTH Head in 60-70mtr depth for flatties and Morwong as the Snapper just havent been around lately. The current still fresh from the Nth and a E-NE wind about 10kts kept the sea joggley this was the best choice for the conditions. Some good fish including Morwong and Gurnard hit the Slurry with plenty of nice Flatties.... Well done lads!

14/11/09

Saturday morning and the weather gods have put on a cracker of a day! The lads from West bus turned up to the wharf and boarded Fishfinder. We fished off Dee Why wide and just nth of the Whale Reef. Not much current about .2 knt from the nth and temp at 20.6 deg slight breeze from the West with N/E winds forcasted the conditions were spot on. Fishing commenced as we left the heads small feather xmas trees were deployed ready for a Bonito or Stripey but we missed out this time. We arrive at Dee why and bottom fishing begins, Sweep Sweep and more Sweep what! I thought huh? something wrong here.... So we move up to the Bahji Grounds Nth of the Whale.. A little better... Trevally, Pigfish and some mowies o.k a start wheres the flatties and Reds? So the decisions made we move down to the Bluefish wide spot on the gravel in 70mtrs, a nice Snapper then another and the Flatties come aboard along with another nice Morwong as the N/Easter intensified the fish bite became intense it was tops and I think the Westbus crew thought so too! well done lads.

15/11/09

Cracker of a day for Coogee Randwick fishing club! again! We depart Rosebay Pier at 5am and head for a bit of ground down Sth off waverly / Coogee beach. A light Southerly breeze, 20.9 deg water and current about .6 knt from the Nth. I start on the S/E edge section of the grounds to see whats going on and the first fish to hit the deck was a lovely Snapper 61cm! beauty, then some Morwong, Moses perch, Pigfish and more reds! this is starting out well. As we progress the next fish a top Jon Dory. As the Southerly increased the reef bite slowed so we moved to Nth Bondi / Dover Heights in about 50mtrs of water. The Flathead were ON! and good sized models at that! Plenty of em! Top days fishing by all.
